THE EASTER EGG MUSEUM
The Pysanka Museum, a branch of the National Museum of Folk Art of Hutsulshchyna and Pokuttya named after J. Kobryński, was opened on October 24, 1987, in the building of the Church of the Annunciation, an architectural monument from the late 16th century (1587).
In 2000, an original building in the shape of the world’s largest pysanka, reaching over 13 meters in height, was constructed for the museum. The exhibition features more than three thousand unique exhibits: pysankas, painted eggs, and scratch eggs created on chicken, goose, ostrich, or quail shells, as well as decorative eggs adorned using various techniques. The museum’s collection totals over 12,000 pieces. The collection includes pysankas from all historical and ethnographic regions of Ukraine, with a significant portion representing the traditions of Hutsulshchyna and Pokuttya, which formed the basis of the museum’s collection. The museum also presents miniature artworks from thirty-six countries around the world.
The oldest item in the collection, not only in our museum but also in Ukraine, is a 500-year-old pysanka created with natural dyes on a goose egg, which was found in Lviv during archaeological excavations. The Pysanka Museum was a nominee in the nationwide “Seven Wonders of Ukraine” campaign (it ranked 8th), and was recognized for its high tourist rating by the travel website “TRIPADVISOR” as a tourist “magnet” of the Carpathians. In 2018, the element “Tradition of Hutsul Pysanka” was included in the National List of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine, submitted to the Expert Council of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine by the Pysanka Museum.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts workshops on pysanka making and other forms of art that can be visited by appointment, offers various genre exhibitions, and organizes creative meetings, presentations, and artistic events.
