ODESSA MUSEUM OF WESTERN AND EASTERN ART
The Museum of Western and Eastern Art in Odessa was founded in 1923. Its collection was enriched with paintings from private collections, as well as from the City Museum of Fine Arts, the Kyiv Museum of Western and Eastern Art, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the Alexander Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art is one of the finest and most renowned museums in Ukraine. It has earned this status due to several reasons. Firstly, the museum is located in the palace of the merchant Abaza, designed between 1856 and 1858 by the architect Otto. The building was constructed in the eclectic style popular in the mid-19th century, where baroque features harmoniously intertwine with elements of rococo and empire styles. Secondly, one can talk about the museum’s exhibition for hours, but it is better to see it in person. The Museum of Western and Eastern Art boasts an astounding collection of paintings by some of the world's most famous artists. Museum Exhibition The museum's exhibition occupies twenty-three halls on two floors and consists of three departments: Eastern Art, Ancient Art, and Western European Art. On the first floor, visitors can see a collection of casts of ancient sculptures, such as Polykleitos’ "Doryphoros" and Myron’s "Discobolus." One of the halls features art from Eastern countries—Iran (ancient Persia), India, Tibet, China, and Japan. Noteworthy items include Chinese lacquerware, Japanese prints, Indian jewelry, furniture, and faience tiles from Persia. The museum boasts a small but fascinating collection of works by Italian artists, including paintings such as Francesco Granacci's "Madonna and Child" and Francesco Guardi's "Grand Canal in Venice." However, the highlight of the collection is Caravaggio's "The Taking of Christ." One of the most interesting departments is the painting gallery, which displays works by Western European masters from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including Rubens, Alessandro Magnasco, Rockwell Kent, Frans Hals, and Pierre Mignard. Practically every week, the museum hosts various lectures and film screenings, which are interesting both for art connoisseurs and for newcomers and children.
