NOVGOROD-SIVERSKY MUSEUM-RESERVE "THE SONG OF IGOR'S CAMPAIGN"
The Novhorod-Siverskyi Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve "The Song of Igor's Campaign" was established on September 1, 1990, based on the Novhorod-Siverskyi Local Lore Museum and the branch of the Chernihiv Historical and Architectural Reserve. The reserve currently includes the following components: the "The Song of Igor's Campaign" museum, local lore department, the Assumption Cathedral (18th century), St. Nicholas Church (18th century), Triumphal Arch (18th century), Trade Rows and Warehouses (19th century). It is the only state museum in Ukraine dedicated to the most famous monument of Old Russian literature.
The museum-reserve plays a crucial role in the development of tourism in ancient Novhorod-Siverskyi and the Chernihiv region as a whole. It is a scientific and powerful research institution engaged in the scientific attribution, classification, state registration, and all types of evaluation of objects that can be identified as cultural values, with the aim of inclusion in the Museum Fund of Ukraine. Additionally, it is a tourist attraction of the city and the region, having been listed as one of the Tourist Magnets of the Chernihiv region last year.
Situated on the territory of one of the oldest monasteries on the Left Bank - the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, in the former rooms of the prior, the museum-reserve occupies a building dating back to the 16th century. The museum-reserve has a decent collection of old prints and liturgical books, including original rare editions of "The Song of Igor's Campaign," a large collection of embroidery, icons, some of which are rare and unique. Operating today in conditions of war and being on the border with an aggressor country, the primary tasks of the museum-reserve staff include preserving the historical and cultural heritage, museum collection, and restoring architectural monuments that have suffered as a result of the city's shelling.
